SUMMARY:Book Reading: Linwood Barclay
DESCRIPTION:New York Times Bestselling author Linwood Barclay will join us to discuss his most recent book\, Not A Word\, a chilling thriller where a man’s world is upended after he stumbles upon a grisly crime scene in the family home. \n\n\n\nEvery family has secrets\, but when Reece visits his parents’ house\, he’s shocked to find them in bed\, dead. At first glance it looks like a murder-suicide perpetrated by his father\, but on closer inspection there’s clearly more to the story. For starters\, inconsistencies in the crime scene suggest his dad may not have shot himself. \n\n\n\nAs Reece\, shaken by his horrifying discovery\, awaits questioning from the police\, his phone lights up with a call. It’s the last person he ever would have expected to hear from. \n\n\n\nReeling from the day’s events\, Reece finds himself questioning everything he thought he knew about his parents—and whether he and his own family are in danger now. While the authorities work to untangle the baffling crime scene\, Reece is pulled into a web of secrets linked to the unscrupulous pharma company his father worked for years ago. \n\n\n\nIn order to protect the people he loves most\, he’ll have to dig deep into his own past to understand who his parents were\, what they did\, and who they hurt—before he ends up paying for their sins. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinwood Barclay is the New York Times bestselling author of numerous previous novels and two thrillers for children. His books have been translated into more than two dozen languages. He wrote the screenplay adaptation for his novel Never Saw It Coming and his books The Accident and No Time for Goodbye have been made into TV series in France. No Time for Goodbye was a global bestseller. A native of Connecticut\, he now lives in Toronto with his wife\, Neetha. \n\n\n\n\nBooks will be available for purchase at the event with a book signing to follow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $15 + HST each. SUMMARY:We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes
DESCRIPTION:This is a free film screening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1940. It is a time of national emergency. Hitler’s army ruthlessly sweeps Western Europe. In face of invasion\, Britain suffers devastating bombing raids. The U-Boats wreak havoc in the Atlantic. Desperate food shortages seem to foreshadow imminent invasion. The Old World seeks help from the New. \n\n\n\n2018. Bonnie Sitter\, an author based in Exeter\, Ontario searches through some of her family photographs. She finds a captivating little black and white image: a group of smiling young women on the running board of a vehicle. When she flips the photo\, an intriguing caption reads: “Farmerettes 1946”. This moment sparks a compelling research journey that eventually leads her to co-author an entire book on a forgotten subject. \n\n\n\nTold from Bonnie’s perspective\, We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes\, reveals the true and forgotten story of the Ontario Farmerettes – 40\,000 teenage girls who volunteered to work on farms between 1941 and 1952. Arriving from different parts of Ontario and Quebec to many locations in Southwestern Ontario\, the young women began this challenge with no prior farming experience. Their job: to ensure critical food production during the most perilous period of modern history. This remarkable contingent of young women were called upon to replace the men on Canadian farms; and they helped the Allies to win the Second World War. \n\n\n\nTheir hardships were tremendous. For long months\, they worked under relentless weather conditions and schedules. Yet they persevered and managed to produce hundreds of thousands of tons of food that were shipped to the frontlines to feed soldiers\, starving European populations\, and even prisoners of war. \n\n\n\nAs they fulfilled their duty\, their bond grew stronger. The girls were coming of age and figuring out their place in the world\, while humanity endured one of the most destructive conflicts of the 20th century. \n\n\n\nThrough reenactments and unique archival images\, We Lend a Hand recounts the heartwarming story of these magnificent young women\, now in their late 90s\, bringing back their most cherished memories while reminding us – perhaps for the last time – that service comes in many forms..

SUMMARY:THE STAMPEDERS . . . . One More Time
DESCRIPTION:‘They’re on their way\, to the city lights’ … and\, THE predominant Canadian Rock ‘n’ Roll band of the 1970s –The Stampeders– are bringing along all their classic hits: Wild Eyes\, Carry Me\, Oh My Lady\, Devil You\, Ramona\, Minstrel Gypsy\, Hit the Road Jack and\, of course\, the quintessential Canadian – and Hall of Fame – song\, Sweet City Woman! A veritable soundtrack to a whole generation that will ‘carry you home’ … maybe not to Birmingham … but back to a time of tie-dyed  t-shirts and elevator shoes\, 15¢ coffee and homemade apple pie\, dating and dreaming … By the time The Stampeders get to the first chorus of the first song\, everyone will be singing along. \n\n\n\nNo seventies group represented Canada’s musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. A quick look at Canada’s music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors\, touring more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group during that time.  In 1977 the trio: Rich Dodson (lead guitar)\, Kim Berly (drums) and Ronnie King (bass) parted company but reunited\, fittingly at the Calgary Stampede\, 15 years later in 1992. Since then they’ve been recognized by SOCAN for their Lifetime Achievement\, been inducted into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame on five occasions and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for their 1971 seminal hit Sweet City Woman. \n\n\n\nIn March 2024\, just before the Ontario leg of this tour\, Ronnie King passed away.  In the final days\, while in  palliative care\, he insisted that his band mates carry on.  Dave  Chabot\, renowned bassist and long time friend of the band\, who was already scheduled to be on the tour to sit in for Ronnie as needed\, was the obvious choice.  Still\, Ronnie  remains a presence at every show\, as Rich and Kim share stories from 50plus years on the road and pay tribute with a retrospective video.     \n\n\n\nThe enduring musical legacy of The Stampeders  … One More Time … ‘better catch a noon train\, better get there for a rock ‘n’ rolling good time!’     \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $90 + HST each. \n\n\n\nTo become a Stockey Member\, you can visit us on our Membership page for more information and to purchase online\, give us a call at 705-746-4466 extension 405\, or visit us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nTickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 405 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound.

SUMMARY:Stompin’ Tom’s band Whiskey Jack presents Believe in Your Country
DESCRIPTION:with special guest\, comedy legend\, Seán Cullen \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConnors Canada meets Cullen’s Comedy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Stompin’ Tom’s band Whiskey Jack presents Believe in Your Country with special guest\, comedy legend\, Seán Cullen”. In typical Stompin’ Tom fashion\, this show is Canadian top to bottom…playful\, funny\, irreverent\, very musical and unapologetically patriotic.  It was 14 years ago\, not long after Tom died that the Stockey Centre hosted one of Whiskey Jack’s first Stompin’ Tom shows – it’s only fitting to end the tour in Parry Sound. The band’s leader\, Duncan Fremlin says…”It’s been quite a ride performing hundreds of shows across Canada”.For many years\, at his private birthday parties\, Tom invited Whiskey Jack to join him on stage in the bar he built in his home…yes\, his own bar.  If there is an official Stompin’ Tom birthday band\, it is Whiskey Jack and since 2026 is Tom’s 90th year\, that too will be celebrated at their last show.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Whiskey Jack Presents Stories & Songs of Stompin’ Tom” stars comedian\, improviser\, author\, actor and singer Seán Cullen.   At Seán’s first show with Whiskey Jack\, he told the audience that Tom had written songs about potatoes\, tomatoes and tobacco but sadly\, none about Canada’s national food\, poutine.  Within minutes and with the band providing the soundtrack\, I LOVE POUTINE was written and performed simultaneously.  It brought the house down! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoining the show is Tom’s long time fiddler from PEI\, Billy MacInnis and Juno nominee\, Douglas John Cameron.  The band will play all the hits (The Hockey Song\, Bud the Spud and more) and share some outrageously true stories of the private and backstage world of Stompin’ Tom. Whiskey Jack’s success began in the 1980’s when the band was invited to host their own “Ol’ Back Porch” segment on CBC TV’s Tommy Hunter Show.  A decade later\, they joined the Stompin’ Tom tour resulting in numerous recordings and tours.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese two Canadian musical institutions would continue to perform and record together until Tom’s death in 2014.To honour the band’s 50th year in Canadian music\, Whiskey Jack will host a select few anniversary productions in 2027.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $42.95 + HST each. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nAlternatively\, tickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office staff at 705-746-4466 extension 405 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound. SUMMARY:Brotherhood
DESCRIPTION:This is a free film screening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe True Story and the Film \n\n\n\nOn July 20th\, 1926 — 100 summers ago — the Brotherhood of St. Andrew leadership group\, young men from Toronto’s St. James Cathedral\, set off across Balsam Lake in a war canoe. When they encountered a freak summer storm\, many of them lost their lives\, but what galvanized a young nation at the time was the tragedy’s tales of self-sacrifice\, dignity and camaraderie.  \n\n\n\nThe counsellors leading these boys were veterans of the Great War\, men who had already lived through their own tests of courage and loss. The young men they led were growing up in that conflict’s long shadow — raised on stories of sacrifice they were\, in the end\, called to live out themselves. As Remembrance Day season draws to a close\, and on the story’s own centenary\, Brotherhood is a chance to sit with that inheritance: how one generation’s wartime sacrifice shaped the next\, and how it echoed back across the water at Balsam Lake. \n\n\n\nWritten and directed by Richard Bell\, the film was produced by Mehernaz Lentin and Anand Ramayya\, and executive produced by celebrated artist Charles Pachter. It stars an entirely Canadian cast: Brendan Fehr\, Brendan Fletcher\, Jake Manley\, Sam Ashe Arnold\, Gage Munroe\, Matthew Isen\, Dylan Everett and Spencer MacPerson.  \n\n\n\nFrom Richard Bell: “I first read about this story in a Toronto paper when the 80th anniversary occurred\, and it impacted me immediately. Researching and writing it was like unearthing buried treasure. This movie is a survival story: it’s a testament to the bravery of these young men\, but it’s also an adventure tale\, and will hopefully serve as a clarion call for young people to look up from their phones and return to nature.”  \n\n\n\nAfter the drownings\, an inquest followed and a jury recommended that war and racing canoes be banned from boys’ and girls’ camps\, and awareness and concern about water safety began to be seriously examined.

SUMMARY:Men of the Deeps: December Coal
DESCRIPTION:In a mining town\, a few lumps of coal in the stove meant more than heat. It meant the tea was on\, the boots were off\, and the house was alive with chatter\, laughter\, and maybe even a song or two. \n\n\n\nDecember Coal is a tribute to that kind of warmth. To the work that made it possible. To the families who shared life around it. And to the glow that still brings people together when the nights grow cold. \n\n\n\nA December Coal performance features selections from the 2025 Christmas album\, December Coal\, along with favourites from the 2017 Christmas in the Mine collection.  \n\n\n\nThe jolly miners\, along with special guest singer-songwriter Jenn Sheppard\, are ready to deliver two heartwarming hours of song and story\, new renditions of old favourites\, original pieces never heard before\, and maybe even a bit of foot-stomping cheer. Share in the joy that is December Coal.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Men of the Deeps \n\n\n\nFor sixty years\, Cape Breton’s Men of the Deeps choir has been travelling the world as Canadian Ambassadors\, singing and storytelling to give us a sense of what life was like for miners and their families in mining towns\, preserving our unique Cape Breton history\, folklore\, culture and talent.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe choir has toured throughout Canada\, most of the United States\, China\, and Kosovo. They have been to the Northwest Territories and as far south as Arizona\, Alabama\, and Florida\, and to the Appalachian coal-mining communities of Kentucky\, Virginia\, and Pennsylvania. They have even performed in Las Vegas\, Nevada.  \n\n\n\nToday\, the Men of the Deeps are so much more than just a singing group; they are a social institution. The camaraderie amongst the members carries over to their audiences wherever they perform. Clad in authentic mining coveralls and hard hats\, they make an impressive impact when they enter a concert hall in total darkness using only the lamps on their helmets for light. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJenn Sheppard is a Cape Breton singer-songwriter\, recording artist\, writer\, producer\, and performer. A familiar face on stages throughout Atlantic Canada\, she is a longtime collaborator of the Men of the Deeps and Heather Rankin. On this tour\, she appears as both herself and her comedic alter ego\, Ellsa. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $61.95+HST.
