SUMMARY:David Francey
DESCRIPTION:David Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter\, who has become known as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star). Born in Ayrshire\, Scotland to parents who were factory workers\, he moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades\, he worked across Canada in rail yards\, construction sites\, and in the Yukon bush\, all the while writing poetry\, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked. \n\n\n\nA truly authentic folk singer\, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s\, his wife\, artist Beth Girdler\, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then\, he has released eleven albums\, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band\, The Rankin Family\, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $39.95 + HST each. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nTickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 405 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound.

SUMMARY:Big Wreck
DESCRIPTION:With special guests Texas King and with a very special performance by Daniel Greaves of The Watchment. Please note Vilivant is no longer taking part in this tour. \n\n\n\nIn the early weeks of 2020\, the members of Big Wreck were returning home after a heavy few months of touring\, ready to settle into a cyclical period of workshopping and woodshedding new material. Of course\, an emerging global pandemic unwelcomely extended a few months of creative respite into nearly a year-and-a-half of inactivity and uncertainty. But borrowing whatever adage you’d like about lemonade or open windows\, frontman Ian Thornley and his bandmates decided to take full advantage of the downtime. \n\n\n\n“It was a crazy and uncertain time\, but I kind of fell right into my rhythm\,” Thornley recalls. “I’d come into my basement writing room and just lock it all away and start following leads – riffs from soundchecks or old phone recordings. There are sounds we’ve never gone for before that I’ve secretly always wanted to try\, so the attitude was kind of\, ‘If not now\, when?’” \n\n\n\nFollowing that lengthy span of experimentation and gestation\, the band hit the studio with revered producer Eric Ratz (Billy Talent\, Arkells) returning behind the board. The result is a wealth of riches for the Big Wreck faithful and new fans alike; 15 tracks divided into three EPs that capture the essence of every entry in their celebrated back catalogue while pushing into some unexplored sonic territory – and that’s saying a lot considering the resumes of this particular group of players. \n\n\n\nJoining Thornley and longtime bassist Dave McMillan for the sessions is guitarist Chris Caddell\, who entered the fold in 2019 following the passing of founding guitarist Brian Doherty. Another fixture in the line-up is drummer Sekou Lumumba\, who performed with Thornley’s eponymous solo project in the early aughts and a diverse group of other big names since. \n\n\n\n“Everybody’s got their own fingerprints on this\, and it felt as natural as anything\,” Thornley enthuses about the recordings. Reports and reviews of recent shows have called this the best iteration of Big Wreck they’ve heard\, and Thornley admits he’d have a hard time disagreeing; the five tracks comprising Big Wreck: 7.1\, the first installment of the triad\, make a compelling case for it\, too. \n\n\n\nDespite its relatively short runtime\, the collection encapsulates the raw\, anthemic rock of their inaugural LPs – 1997’s In Loving Memory of… and 2001’s The Pleasure and the Greed – and edgy eclecticism of their more recent JUNO-nominated offerings since reforming in 2012\, including 2019’s dynamic …But for the Sun. \n\n\n\n“Bombs Away” is arguably the heaviest we’ve heard Big Wreck to date\, with a thundering palm-muted riff exploding out of an ominous acoustic guitar intro to anchor the musical intensity and lyrical urgency. The beautifully orchestrated “Fields” is upbeat and uplifting\, sure to have longtime fans feeling right at home\, while the absolutely smoking “High on the Hog” gives everyone a chance to flex their chops and serves as an earnest reminder of Thornley’s impressive range and impactful prowess as a vocalist. “It was a lot of fun playing with this rhythm section\,” Thornley notes. “Things ended up going in a direction they weren’t going to go when we first came into the studio\, but as a musician\, I love being thrown curveballs.” \n\n\n\nThe moratorium on live concerts through the pandemic may be the biggest curveball of his career\, considering Big Wreck’s penchant and reputation for impactful performances. They’re hungry to get back to bombarding audiences with their signature brand of rock\, and fortunately\, their latest work was seemingly built for the big festival stages and headlining runs. \n\n\n\nIndeed\, from both the stereo and stage\, Big Wreck are sure to leave fans satiated and\, considering the breadth of fresh and familiar sounds in their latest tour de force\, anticipating where they might musically venture next. \n\n\n\nTickets are $69.95 + HST each. \n\n\n\nTicket sales Schedule: \n\n\n\nSpotify Presale: Tues\, August 15th @10:00am EST until Wed\, August 16th @ 10:00am EST Stockey Members & Artist Presale: Wed\, August 16\, 2023 @ 10am EST until Thurs\, August 17\, 2023 @ 10pm ESTPublic On Sale: Fri\, August 18\, 2023 @ 10am EST \n\n\n\nTo become a Stockey Member\, you can visit us on our Membership page for more information and to purchase online\, give us a call at 705-746-4466 extension 405\, or visit us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nTickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 405 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound.

SUMMARY:The Fourth Annual Big Sound International Film Festival (Dec. 6\, 7 & 14)
DESCRIPTION:The Big Sound International Film Festival is an annual multi-day event that intertwines the spell-binding nature of Georgian Bay with the sophisticated talent of international filmmakers\, to create an unforgettable cinematic experience\, and a festival for films and filmmakers to advance\, and be recognized. \n\n\n\nHosted by The Stockey Centre in Parry Sound the venue overlooks the big sound of Georgian Bay\, where filmmakers will enjoy live screenings inside our state of the art theatre that draws audiences from around the globe. \n\n\n\nOrganized by filmmakers with filmmakers in mind\, Big Sound creates an atmosphere of collaboration on new and existing projects with like-minded artists\, entrepreneurs and experts from all areas of the film industry. It is a networking event with patio parties overlooking the water at sunset\, on a lake that is a rare jewel of freshwater beauty. Let blue skies\, and evening starlight soothe you while you build a network that can last a lifetime. \n\n\n\nJoin us for two days of celebration\, inspiration and collaboration where creativity thrives\, and talent turns vision into reality. \n\n\n\nAll films are general seating. \n\n\n\nFilm Schedule: \n\n\n\nDecember 6th 2023 \n\n\n\n5pm: Short Films (99 minutes)\, This event is free admission – no tickets required\, seats are first come first served for this film block only! \n\n\n\n\nAll Sacred Things\n\nIn “All Sacred Things\,” a moving and emotional 25-minute documentary\, Indigenous college students Summer\, Shawn\, and Zarah embark on a reconnecting journey back to their culture\, guided by spiritual leader Andria. Set against the transcendental backdrop of the near-extinct Ojibway Spirit Horses\, the film encapsulates their quest for vision\, identity\, and reconnection. Through intimate sharing circles and raw emotional exchanges\, the film explores the students’ awakenings\, making it a compelling story of Indigenous resilience\, spirituality\, and the profound role of the Spirit Horses in fostering reconnection and reconciliation.\n\n\n\n\n\nLogging in Algonquin\n\nLogging Algonquin is a 28 minute documentary film that looks at the historical and on-going logging happening in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario\, Canada. Through conversations with indigenous locals\, scientists\, foresters\, and political experts\, the film asks the question: ‘Does logging belong in our modern day park?’\n\n\n\n\n\nEcotone\n\nAn ecotone is like a frontier\, where two distinct ecosystems interact and communicate. Here\, this concept serves as a metaphor for humans and nature as separate entities but still thriving together through sound. In La Gomera (Canary Islands)\, people speak through the clouds. They use Silbo-Gomero\, a long-lasting trait of human connection to nature\, which mixes with the natural soundscapes: birds\, insects\, wind\, rain…\, all blending in a single symphony with its own seasonal and social dynamics. In a hyperconnected digital world\, this place encourages us to stop and listen\, just like our ancestors\, and reflect on our place within the ecosystems.\n\n\n\n\n\nTollermania\n\nIn this film\, Ukrainian-Canadian ceramic artist\, Natalia Laluq\, interprets the life and work of Canadian world champion figure skater and artist\, Toller Cranston\, through a stop-motion installation of individually crafted ceramic plates. The art project itself was almost 2 years in the making. The show took place at Toller Cranston’s studio in Mexico in 2014\, the year before Toller died. This documentary shows the work from initial concept through process and completion. It is one artist interpretation of another artist’s work and life.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7pm: Feature Narrative: The Founder Effect (Length TBA)\, Tickets are $12 each to this film. \n\n\n\n A perfect family getaway is suddenly upended when a policeman’s grandson disappears. Jack Rooney (Rick Edwards) has already lost a son. He’s not about to lose his grandson\, too. Forced to reckon with family history\, he sets out to rescue the boy from the shadows… a journey of conscience rippled by the voice of a visiting missing persons expert (Greg Sestero)\, whose haunting tales of the vanished illuminate the mysterious phenomena that seem to be in Jack’s way. In a town called Hope\, can redemption be found?  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDecember 7th 2023 \n\n\n\n6:30pm: Feature Documentary: When Hope Breaks Through (89 minutes)\, Tickets are $12 each to this film. \n\n\n\nFrom Award Winning director Matthew Wagner comes When Hope Breaks Through\, the inspiring story of Mike Shoreman\, a disabled paddleboarder who attempts to become the first person with disabilities to cross all five Great Lakes. In 2018 Mike was diagnosed with a neurological condition that left him paralyzed\, with vertigo\, hearing and vision loss\, ultimately leading to depression and a mental health breakdown. This riveting documentary explores the current state of the mental health crisis in Canada and our relationships with our own mental health. The film immerses the audience in Mike’s epic five crossings\, encompassing over 300 kilometers of open water paddling with his dedicated crossings team. Together these strangers come together and form an inseparable bond as they face and conquer obstacles from boats breaking down\, medical emergencies to hallucinations and everything in between. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8:30pm: Manufacturing The Threat (84 minutes)\, Tickets are $12 each to this film. \n\n\n\nManufacturing the Threat is a thrilling and emotional film\, which examines a deeply disturbing episode in Canadian history when an impoverished couple was coerced by undercover law enforcement agents into carrying out a terrorist bombing. Shining a light into the murky world of police infiltration\, incitement\, and agent provocateurs\, the film shows how Canada’s policing and national security agencies\, granted additional powers after 9/11\, routinely break laws with little to no accountability or oversight. \n\n\n\nDecember 14th 2023 \n\n\n\n7:00pm:  Five Films From The War\, Tickets are $12 each to this film. \n\n\n\nThe project was initiated shortly after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Already before the start of the war\, the Ukrainian ESSE Production House had made initial plans on how to secure footage and documentation in the event of a war. They\, therefore\, quickly became a hub in Kyiv\, shooting\, collecting\, documenting\, and archiving material from the war-torn areas. But it was also essential to get this footage out to the world and offer new perspectives on the war\, mainly focusing on the civilian perspective. \n\n\n\nThrough the Copenhagen-based NGO IMS (International Media Support)\, a connection was established with the Danish Film Directors Association and board member Ida Grøn. From the wishes of the Ukrainian filmmakers\, the idea emerged to have Danish directors make short creative documentaries from the Ukrainian material and\, in this way\, offer new eyes and a poetic\, creative take on images often too present and too close for the Ukrainian filmmakers themselves. \n\n\n\nFive Danish directors boarded the project and got access to a server with all the material from ESSE\, and out of access to the same material\, five different films emerged. Still\, all with the same focus—going beyond the news reportage and taking a deeper look at the everyday consequences for the civilian population. \n\n\n\nPresenting the five films in a joint programme showing five different approaches to a unique collaboration. Together\, the five films become a powerful statement on the consequences of war\, forcing the viewer to look and not forget.

SUMMARY:Boreal's Songs for the Snowy Season
DESCRIPTION:Boreal’s ‘Songs for the Snowy Season’ is the perfect antidote to a cold winter’s night. Award-winning solo musical artists Katherine Wheatley\, Tannis Slimmon\, and Angie Nussey come together as Boreal each December to shine their collective light on Canada’s darkest month with their uplifting show\, “Songs for the Snowy Season”. This year’s concert features Boreal’s own wintry songs and some of the trio’s favourite standards. Their lyrics conjure up sights and sounds that bring chills of recognition to the listener: squirrels’ footprints in the snow\, winter’s hush\, mittens\, snowball fights\, blizzards and shovels. But it’s the beautiful vocal arrangements and accompaniment\, the spontaneous stories\, humour\, and the inspired musical moments that make this such a special experience. You will laugh\, cry\, sing and ultimately walk out into the winter’s night with the comfort and joy of knowing we’re all in this frosty and glorious season together. \n\n\n\n\n“With stunningly beautiful voices\, Boreal captures the festive spirit like no other act I’ve ever presented. With exquisitely intricate harmonies and heartwarming stories\, Boreal connects with their audience in a profound way. Our show was a sellout and we immediately booked them for next season! Highly recommended!” \nGeorge Scott (Presenter\, Alliston and Beeton\, ON)\n\n\n\nTickets go on sale on Saturday May 27th to Stockey Members.
