And so\, the coal miners’ legacy is passed around in spoken word and melody; the ways we understand it best. \n\n\n\nCome with us as we explore life for the coal miner…after the pit. \n\n\n\nThe Men of the Deeps is a choir of working and retired coal miners from the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia\, Canada. Organized in 1966 as part of Cape Breton’s contribution to Canada’s Centennial Year (1967)\, the group’s inception was an effort by the people of Cape Breton to preserve in song some of the rich folklore of that island’s coal mining communities. \n\n\n\nSince 1967 the group has been singing of the work and lifestyle of the Cape Breton coal miner to audiences throughout most of Canada and the United States. In 1976 they became the first Canadian performing group to tour the People’s Republic of China after diplomatic relations between the two nations were restored in 1972. And as recently as September 1999 the men traveled to Kosovo in the former Republic of Yugoslavia at the request of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs\, where they performed in a gala festival organized by actress Vanessa Redgrave on behalf of the United Nations Children’s Fund. The group’s most recent tours have brought the choir as far north as the Ekati diamond mines in the Northwest Territories\, and as far south as Arizona\, Alabama\, Florida and the Appalachian coal mining communities of Kentucky\, Virginia and Pennsylvania. In September 2008 the group was invited to perform in Las Vegas at the international MineExpo conference where sold out audiences enjoyed its unique blend of songs and stories for six consecutive nights. \n\n\n\nToday the Men of the Deeps are more than a singing group -it is a social institution. There is a comradery amongst the members of the group that carries over to their audiences wherever they perform. DESCRIPTION:The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm\, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements\, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes\, raging fiddle\, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEchoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s\, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk\, metal\, bluegrass\, swing\, and even klezmer. \n\n\n\nOriginally formed as a quartet\, Cantrip sprung from a local session in Edinburgh nearly twenty years ago. Their driving music immediately caught the attention of the masses\, and they were quickly signed to the Foot Stompin’ label. \n\n\n\nAfter a period of hiatus in which children were born and continents were left for new ones\, Cantrip redefined its sound. Trimming itself to a trio\, the band tightened its arrangements while expanding its influence. New inspirations began creeping into the sound\, complementing the traditional foundation of the band. \n\n\n\nAfter 20 years of touring\, Cantrip has found a character like no other. But for the acclaimed Canadian pianist and singer\, there is no set destination\, no achievable end point on his path; it’s all about the journey itself\, and that journey will always be ongoing. \n\n\n\nOver the course of decades as a professional performer\, Kaeshammer has developed a signature blend of classical\, jazz\, blues\, and boogie-woogie with effortless pop hooks for a compelling crossover style that’s immediately engaging yet impressively substantial. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“When I play\, I don’t worry about if it’s jazz or pop or classical or whatever; I just play what I hear and let the music decide what it wants to be\,” begins Kaeshammer. “Sure\, there are different styles\, different eras\, different approaches\, but when you really look at it\, it’s all just music based on 12 notes.” \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Germany\, Kaeshammer began performing club\, theatre\, and festival stages throughout Europe in his early teens and continued on that trajectory after emigrating to Canada’s West Coast with his family in the mid-‘90s. Our Box Office has contacted ticket holders. \n\n\n\nTwo-spirit Mi’kmaw teenager Link (Phillip Lewitski) is just discovering — and asserting — his sexuality when his already volatile home life goes off the rails. His abusive father explodes after the cops bust Link and his half-brother Travis (Avery Winters-Anthony) for stealing scrap metal. When he finds out that his supposedly dead mother may be alive\, Link flees with Travis in tow. Sparks fly in a chance encounter with teen drifter Pasmay (Joshua Odjick)\, who shares Link’s Indigenous roots and offers to help find his mother — but will Link’s (well-founded) mistrust of people ruin his potential new relationship and the group’s mission? \n\n\n\nRiffing on the road-movie genre\, director Bretten Hannam charts Link’s growing self-awareness\, which is deeply connected to the (re)discovery of his heritage. It’s been a while since a movie has fully relished in the bucolic Eastern Canada countryside. The landscape (Annapolis Valley in traditional Mi’kmaq territory) offers succour to Link and Travis — and opens them up to a very different world. Wildhood will elicit comparisons to recent Canadian titles like Firecrackers and Sleeping Giant\, but the protagonists in those films were constrained by their age and limited choices. While Link and Travis aren’t free from danger\, heartbreak\, or disappointment\, their lives are increasingly defined by possibility. \n\n\n\nTickets are $12 each. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts\, the Parry Sound Public Library\, and the Bobby Orr Community Centre\, all three locations will be giving out ballots to all attendees to fill out to be drawn to win a prize basket at the end of the March Break – you get one entry with each free event you attend at each of the three facilities! \n\n\n\nAt The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts (2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound)\, all events are free!: \n\n\n\n\nSaturday March 11th at 2pm: Free Family Film – Fireheart\n\nWe’ll be joined by members of the Parry Sound Fire Department following the film!\n\n\n\nSet in New York in 1930\, the film centers on Georgia Nolan\, a 16-year-old girl who hopes to become the world’s first female firefighter despite being told as a child by her ex-firefighter father Shawn that women are not allowed to. Shawn is requested by the mayor of New York to come out of retirement to head up a young team of firefighters to combat a serial arsonist\, who uses purple gas to hypnotize others and has resulted in the disappearances of other firefighters. Wishing to help\, Georgia disguises herself as a man named Joe and joins the team.\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday March 13th from 12pm to 3pm: Zoo To You\n\nZoo To You is a traveling educational event that is designed to both educate and entertain all ages and audiences. They provide a hands on interactive event with such animals as reptiles\, mammals and exotics. Their animals are well socialized\, tame\, friendly and handled on a daily basis. They offer the opportunity to see\, hold\, interact with the animals while learning fun facts about them!\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday March 14th from 12:30pm to 2:30pm: Goats from Sky River Meadows\n\nSky River Meadows was founded in 2009 and is the home of the Sky River therapeutic herd of Nigerian Dwarf Goats. This March Break they’ll be brining a group of goats to visit us at The Stockey Centre!\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday March 15th from 1pm to 2:30pm: Long and McQuade Instrument Petting Zoo\n\nInstead of goats and rabbits\, the Long and McQuade Instrument Petting Zoo includes instruments such as horns\, trumpets\, drums and guitars.
