SUMMARY:Bands on the Bay: Don James
DESCRIPTION:Bands on the Bay: Free Summer ConcertsA free concert overlooking the bay? This is The Thing To Do on a summer Tuesday evening! Performances are held outside on our fully licensed deck or inside in case of rain from June to August\, accompanied by our cash bar.  \n\n\n\nAbout the performer: \n\n\n\nDon has enjoyed the music of Gordon Lightfoot since his teenage years. This is primarily what lead him to learn to play the guitar and pursue his interest in his music even further. Using both six and twelve string guitar\, accompanied by background rhythm/drums and harmony voices\, plus a synthesizer for the addition of string accompaniment\, the sound is realistic and renders Lightfoot’s songs in their familiar manner.

SUMMARY:Book Reading: An Evening with Jill Frayne\, Helen Humphreys\, and Merilyn Simonds
DESCRIPTION:In Why I’m Here\, Fifteen-year-old Gale is desperate to get out of Whitehorse\, a fact that is immediately clear to counsellor Helen Cotillard when Gale reluctantly walks into her office with her stepmother. It’s 1995\, and one counselling agency for kids and families serves all of the Yukon. Gale has been having anxiety attacks\, the last one so severe it landed her in the hospital. Helen soon begins to realize that Gale’s distress at being separated from her little sister Buddie too closely parallels a calamity from her own past. This tragic similarity leaves Helen uneasy about her profession and her ability to help her clients. When Gale does escape back to her home in Cobalt\, Ontario\, to protect Buddie from their brutal mother\, she risks her own future. Through arresting\, compelling images\, Jill Frayne shows both the fierce beauty of the Yukon\, and the damaged\, enduring landscapes of two human hearts. \n\n\n\nAnd a Dog Called Fig is a memoir of the writing life told through the dogs Humphreys has lived with and loved over a lifetime\, culminating with the recent arrival and settling in of Fig\, a Vizsla puppy. Interspersed are stories of other writers and their irreplaceable companions: Virginia Woolf and Grizzle\, Gertrude Stein and Basket\, Thomas Hardy and Wessex—the dog who walked the dining table at dinner parties\, taking whatever he liked—and many more. It’s a book about companionship and loss and creativity that is filled with the beauty of a steadfast canine friend and the restorative powers of nature. It is also a book about craft\, divided into sections that echo the working parts of a novel—Beginnings\, Character\, Pacing\, Setting\, Structure\, Process\, Endings. Just as every work of art is different\, every dog is different—with distinctive needs and lessons to offer. And if we let them guide us\, they\, like art\, will show us many worlds we would otherwise miss. \n\n\n\nFrom award-winning author Merilyn Simonds\, Woman\, Watching is a remarkable biography of an extraordinary woman — a Swedish aristocrat who survived the Russian Revolution to become an internationally renowned naturalist\, one of the first to track the mid-century decline of songbirds. Referred to as a Canadian Rachel Carson\, Louise de Kiriline Lawrence lived and worked in an isolated log cabin near North Bay. After her husband was murdered by Bolsheviks\, she refused her Swedish privilege and joined the Canadian Red Cross\, visiting her northern Ontario patients by dogsled. When Elzire Dionne gave birth to five babies\, Louise became nurse to the Dionne Quintuplets. Repulsed by the media circus\, she retreated to her wilderness cabin\, where she devoted herself to studying the birds that nested in her forest. Author of six books and scores of magazine stories\, de Kiriline Lawrence and her “loghouse nest” became a Mecca for international ornithologists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJill Frayne\, Helen Humphreys\, and Merilyn Simonds\n\n\n\nJILL FRAYNE worked for many years as a family counsellor in Toronto and central Ontario. Following a solo journey to Canada’s West Coast and Yukon Territory\, her travel memoir\, Starting Out in the Afternoon\, was published by Random House. Since then\, her outdoor adventure articles have appeared in several Canadian publications: The Walrus\, Explore Magazine\, Up Here\, Canadian Geographic\, to name a few. She divides her time between a maple woods in Central Ontario and the mountains around Atlin\, BC. Why I’m Here is her first novel. \n\n\n\nHELEN HUMPHREYS is an acclaimed and award-winning author of fiction\, non-fiction and poetry. She has won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize\, a Lambda Literary Award for Fiction and the Toronto Book Award. And she has been a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction\, the Trillium Book Prize and CBC Radio’s Canada Reads. Her most recent novel is Rabbit Foot Bill. The recipient of the Harbourfront Festival Prize for literary excellence\, Helen Humphreys lives in Kingston\, Ontario. \n\n\n\nMERILYN SIMONDS is the author of 18 books\, including the non-fiction classic The Convict Lover\, Gutenberg’s Fingerprint\, and most recently\, the novel Refuge. The founder and first artistic director of the Kingston Writers Fest\, Simonds is an influential champion of writers and writing. She lives with writer and translator Wayne Grady and divides her time between Kingston\, Ontario\, and San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico. \n\n\n\nTickets are $15 + HST each. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nTickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 205 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound.

SUMMARY:Film at The Stockey: Three Waters
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, Scott Parent and his 9 year old daughter Acadia set out on a 500km journey to trace their ancestral roots and to take water samples for deep water contamination research. \n\n\n\nA mission into the heart of Lake Huron\, Three Waters traces Scott and Acadia’s unsupported stand up paddleboard journey from Drummond Island in the US to Penetanguishene – following the migration of their Metis ancestors in 1828. The paddlers take deep water samples along the route to be analyzed for microplastics research. On the many remote and hazardous stretches of shoreline and open water\, they discover things even deeper about themselves and our relationship to the fragile and changing Great Lakes environment. \n\n\n\nThree Waters was produced with the support of the Georgian Bay Land Trust’s King Family Bursary. \n\n\n\nJoin us for its Parry Sound premiere on August 17th at 7pm at The Stockey Centre. Admission is free but donations at the door are appreciated. The event will feature general seating.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Bruce Cockburn
DESCRIPTION:A waitlist is available by contacting our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 205. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor 50 years\, this Canadian musical legend has been capturing in song the essence of human experience – while fiercely striving to make it better. \n\n\n\nOne of Canada’s finest artists\, Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics\, spirituality\, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk\, jazz\, rock\, and worldbeat styles while travelling to such far-flung places as Guatemala\, Mali\, Mozambique\, and Nepal\, and writing memorable songs about his ever-expanding world of wonders. “My job\,” he explains\, “is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper and the pulling of notes out of metal.” \n\n\n\nThat scratching and pulling has earned Cockburn high praise as an exceptional songwriter and a revered guitarist. His songs of romance\, protest\, and spiritual discovery are among the best to have emerged from Canada over the last 50 years. His guitar playing\, both acoustic and electric\, has placed him in the company of the world’s top instrumentalists. And he remains deeply respected for his activism on issues from native rights and land mines to the environment and Third World debt\, working for organizations such as Oxfam\, Amnesty International\, Doctors Without Borders\, and Friends of the Earth. \n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, Cockburn has deftly captured the joy\, pain\, fear\, and faith of human experience in song. Whether singing about retreating to the country or going up against chaos\, tackling imperialist lies or embracing ecclesiastical truths\, he has always expressed a tough yet hopeful stance: to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight. “We can’t settle for things as they are\,” he once warned. “If you don’t tackle the problems\, they’re going to get worse.” \n\n\n\nFor his many achievements\, the Ottawa-born artist has been honoured with 13 Juno Awards\, an induction into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame\, as well as the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award\, and has been made an Officer of the Order of Canada. But he never rests on his laurels. “I’d rather think about what I’m going to do next\,” says Cockburn. “My models for graceful aging are guys like John Lee Hooker and Mississippi John Hurt\, who never stop working till they drop\, as I fully expect to be doing\, and just getting better as musicians and as human beings.” \n\n\n\nHis commitment to growth has made Bruce Cockburn both an exemplary citizen and a legendary artist whose prized songbook will be celebrated for many years to come. \n\n\n\nTickets: \n\n\n\nOrchestra Rows AA – FF: $99 + HSTOrchestra Rows A – J: $89 + HSTMezzanine: $84 + HSTBalcony: $79 + HST\n\n\n\nSponsored by: Team Marshall: Cottage Country Real Estate\, Terry D. SUMMARY:Sloan
DESCRIPTION:In 1991 bassist and vocalist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scott met while studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design\, and with the addition of Patrick Pentland on guitar and vocals and Jay Ferguson on guitar\, formed Sloan. A year later the band made their recording debut on the Halifax\, Canada CD compilation “Hear & Now” before releasing their debut EP “Peppermint” (1991) on their own label Murderecords. In 1992 Sloan signed with Geffen Records and released their full-length debut “Smeared”. \n\n\n\nThe band’s 1994 follow-up “Twice Removed”\, despite the lack of promotion by Geffen Records due to artistic disputes sold well in their home nation of Canada but not so well in America. The record was undisputedly simpler and more melodic than its predecessor despite the label’s best efforts for Sloan make it noisier and for them to fit into the grunge scene. The album was named “The Best Canadian Album of All Time” by one poll and revered by many other and the band supported the album with a relentless tour of Canada thereafter. \n\n\n\nDuring a small hiatus in 1995 where members pursued their own musical interests\, Sloan returned in 1995 and released the single “Same Old Flame”. The single made way for another hugely popular album in Canada “One Chord to Another” in 1996. It was recorded on a very tight budget however eventually got a well-received U.S. release when the band signed with EMI subsidiary Enclave in early 1997. \n\n\n\nSloan subsequently released “Navy Blues” in 1998\, the double live album “4 Nights at the Palais Royale” in 1999\, “Between the Bridges” in 1999\, “Pretty Together” in 2011 and “Action Pact” in 2003. The latter of which was recorded in Los Angeles with Tom Rothrock in the production seat in the hope of appealing to a U.S. audience. Its successor\, the 30-track long “Never Hear the End of It” in 2006 saw all members of the band contributing a section of songs and became Sloan’s highest charting album in the U.S. \n\n\n\nIn 2008 Yep Roc Records released Sloan’s ninth studio album “Parallel Play”\, followed by the EP “Hit & Run” in 2009 and the full-length studio release “Double Cross” in 2011. “Commonwealth”\, released in 2014 is an extensive double album with each of the four sides written by one of the band members to allow their personalities to blossom. \n\n\n\nTickets: \n\n\n\nOrchestra Rows AA – FF: $89 + HSTOrchestra Rows A – J: $79 + HSTMezzanine: $69 + HSTBalcony: $59 + HST\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nTickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 205 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound.
