SUMMARY:Book Reading: Rod Carley in Conversation With Waubgeshig Rice
DESCRIPTION:“Rod Carley has written a captivating and bewitching novel set in England 400 years ago\, yet it runs rife with contemporary relevance and resonance. Sophisticated\, funny\, insightful\, timeless yet timely… beautifully written…RUFF is a story to be savoured.” \n\n\n\n\n \nTerry Fallis\, two-time winner of the Leacock Medal for Humour\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRod Carley’s back with another theatrical odyssey packed with an unforgettable cast of Elizabethan eccentrics. It’s a madcap world more modern than tomorrow where gender is what a person makes of it (no matter the story beneath their petticoats or tights). \n\n\n\nWill Shakespeare is having a very bad year. Suffering from a mid-life crisis\, a plague outbreak\, and the death of the ancient Queen\, Will’s mettle is put to the test when the new King puts his witch-burning hobby aside to announce a national play competition that will determine which theatre company will secure his favour and remain in business. As he struggles to write a Scottish supernatural thriller\, Will faces one ruff and puffy obstacle after another including a young rival punk poet and his activist-wife fighting for equality and a woman’s right to tread the boards. \n\n\n\nWill and his band of misfits must ensure not only their own survival\, but that of England as well. The stage is set for an outrageous and compelling tale of ghosts\, ghostwriting\, writer’s block\, and the chopping block. \n\n\n\nRuffly based on a true story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRod Carley is an author\, humourist\, actor\, director\, playwright\, and cat wrangler. He is the award-winning author of four works of literary fiction: RUFF (September 2024)\, GRIN REAPING (long listed for the 2023 Leacock Medal for Humour\, 2022 Bronze Winner for Humour from Foreword Review INDIES\, a Finalist for the 2023 Next Generation Indie Book Award for Humor/Comedy\, and long listed for the ReLit Group Awards for Best Short Fiction of 2023); KINMOUNT (long listed for the 2021 Leacock Medal for Humour and Winner of the 2021 Silver Medal for Best Regional Fiction from the Independent Publishers Book Awards); A Matter of Will (Finalist for the 2018 Northern Lit Award for Fiction). \n\n\n\nHis short stories and creative non-fiction have appeared in a variety of Canadian literary magazines including Broadview (winner of the 2022 Award of Excellence for Best Seasonal Article from the Associated Church Press)\, Cloud Lake Literary\, Blank Spaces\, Exile\, HighGrader\, and the anthology 150 Years Up North and More. He was a finalist for the 2021 Carter V. Cooper Short Fiction Prize. Rod is a popular author and moderator with literary festivals and book clubs and has facilitated a variety of writing-related workshops and webinars. He was the 2009 winner of TVO’s Big Ideas/Best Lecturer Competition for his lecture entitled “Adapting Shakespeare within a Modern Canadian Context.” He is a proud alumnus of the Humber School for Writers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWAUBGESHIG RICE grew up in Wasauksing First Nation on the shores of Georgian Bay\, in the southeast of Robinson-Huron Treaty territory. He’s a writer\, listener\, speaker\, language learner\, and a martial artist\, holding a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is the author of the best-selling novels Moon of the Turning Leaves (2023) and Moon of the Crusted Snow (2018)\, Legacy (2014)\, and the short story collection Midnight Sweatlodge (2011). He appreciates loud music and the four seasons. He lives in N’Swakamok—also known as Sudbury\, Ontario—with his wife and three sons. \n\n\n\nTickets are $12 + HST each. This event is general seating. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nTickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 405 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound.

SUMMARY:Matthew Good and His Band
DESCRIPTION:NOW WITH OPENING ACT TEXAS KING! \n\n\n\nMatthew Good is a multi-platinum selling Canadian recording artist\, best known for his signature vocal style\, guitar-driven melodies\, and cinematic lyrics. \n\n\n\nHe began his career as the frontman for the Matthew Good Band\, one of the most successful Canadian alternative rock bands during the 1990s and early 2000s. \n\n\n\nRock radio staples such as “Hello Timebomb\,” “Everything Is Automatic\,” “Indestructible\,” “Apparitions\,” and “Load Me Up” made the group a household name\, selling out shows throughout Canada over seven years and four full-length album releases. Along the way\, the group picked up Juno Awards for Best Group (2000) and Best Rock Album for Beautiful Midnight that same year. \n\n\n\nAfter disbanding in 2002\, Good started writing and recording his first solo record\, 2003’s Avalanche\, which marked a creative departure from his earlier work but had no trouble finding an audience. Hailed as a masterful work of emotional and intellectual depth\, the album struck a chord with critics and audiences alike and set Good’s solo career on a rapid\, upward trajectory. \n\n\n\nAvalanche clocked in at just under 70 minutes long\, making it clear he had plenty to say\, and audiences were ready to listen. With long\, complex melodies to get lost in and in-your-face protest rock\, his solo work would prove to be the cure to the short and vapid pop songs of the early 2000s\, almost prophesying the darker times to come. \n\n\n\nWith his award-winning 2009 record Vancouver\, Good countered the corporate patriotism of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics by shining a light on those in the margins of the major Canadian city\, seemingly swept under the rug to make way for parades and celebrations. Indeed\, Good’s music has often given a voice to the under-represented. \n\n\n\nTo date\, Good’s body of work includes thirteen full-length studio albums\, four EPs\, two compilation LPs\, and one live album. He has been nominated for 21 Juno Awards throughout his career\, with solo wins for Rock Album of the Year for Vancouver and Video of the Year for 2003’s “Weapon”. He has also garnered eight Top 10 radio singles in Canada as a solo artist\, including “Weapon\,” “In A World Called Catastrophe\,” “Alert Status Red\,” “Born Losers” and “Last Parade.” New music from Matthew Good is slated for release in mid-2024. \n\n\n\nHe has never been one to shy away from pushing musical boundaries. Through his music\, Good’s defiant spirit anchors a vulnerable\, unapologetic outlook on life while offering glimpses of hope and reminding us there is beauty in the world. Never one to bite his tongue\, his hyper-awareness of the world around him\, including political\, socio-economic\, and mental health issues\, has earned him accolades for his thoughtful and deliberate approach. \n\n\n\nAs the world\, politically and culturally\, continues to spiral into seemingly darker and darker places\, Good has been there in lockstep\, to hold up a mirror to society’s adoration of violence\, the hypocrisy of those in power\, and the injustices everywhere that permeate his music. \n\n\n\nTickets are: \n\n\n\nOrchestra Pit (Rows AA – FF): $79.95 + HST \n\n\n\nOrchestra (Rows A – J): $74.95 + HST \n\n\n\nMezzanine: $69.95 + HST \n\n\n\nBalcony: $64.95 + HST \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Texas King: \n\n\n\nTexas King is an alternative rock band known for their energetic performances and blend of rock\, indie\, and pop influences. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, they released the EP Changes\, featuring a mix of introspective lyrics and strong instrumentals. This EP led to their signing with Known Accomplice and set the stage for their 2023 follow-up EP\, Capsize. This EP marked a significant step in their growth\, with tracks like the #4 Active Rock radio hit “Whatever You Break.” \n\n\n\nTheir new single\, “Hook Me Up\,” is from their upcoming album and explores the idea of reaching a crossroads in life. The band describes it as a conversation with oneself\, recognizing the need for help and the importance of finding a source of energy to get through tough times. \n\n\n\nInfluenced by Kings of Leon and The Black Keys\, Texas King has been touring and recording since 2014. They’ve played major stages like Boots & Hearts\, Hillside\, Tall Pines\, and Festival d’été de Québec\, while touring across North America with bands like Big Wreck\, Last Dinosaurs\, and The Glorious Sons. \n\n\n\nTexas King continues to move forward in the world of alternative rock with new music and performances on the horizon\, building on their success and looking ahead to what’s next. \n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE \n\n\n\nTickets can also be purchased during our business hours by calling our Box Office at 705-746-4466 extension 405 or visiting us at 2 Bay Street\, Parry Sound.
