Jim Ralph is one of Canada’s most recognizable sports media personalities, having spent over twenty-five years as the beloved radio color commentator for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Drafted by the Chicago Black Hawks in the eighth round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft, Ralph embarked on a seven-year professional career primarily in the minor leagues (AHL, IHL, and CHL).
A legendary highlight of his playing days came in early November 1982, when he was recalled to the NHL to dress as the backup goaltender to Murray Bannerman after Hall of Famer Tony Esposito suffered an injury. Though a severe knee injury at age twenty-two limited his physical longevity, Ralph signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1987 before officially retiring from professional play in 1989.
Ralph immediately transitioned to sports media, co-hosting Rinkside on TSN, serving as a reporter for Global Television’s Sportsline, and co-hosting Molson Leaf Hockey. In 1997, he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs radio broadcast team. Alongside his legendary play-by-play partner Joe Bowen, Ralph formed one of the most celebrated and longest-running partnerships in hockey broadcasting, calling games across AM640, Sportsnet 590 The Fan, and TSN 1050.
Off the air, Ralph is a highly sought-after corporate comedian, emcee, and keynote speaker. Known for his dry, self-deprecating humor regarding his playing days, he is famous for his spot-on vocal impersonations of iconic Canadian sportscasters, including Foster Hewitt, Danny Gallivan, Bob Cole, Dick Irvin, Brian Williams, Dave Van Horne, and Don Cherry.
